What is a sorority?

A sorority is literally a sisterhood.  It is a group of women that have gathered to promote a common set of ideals and purposes.  To understand more fully what a sorority is, we must think back in time to their inception.  In the 19th century, colleges were for men only, and fraternities were already popular on college campuses across the nation.  By the end of the 1800s, women were finally able to pursue higher education, yet college remained a predominantly male institution.  To triumph personally and academically in this environment, women searched for encouragement and support as well as an outlet for their talents and dreams.  As a result, sororities began to be founded, and their spirit of promoting the ideal woman has survived until today.

What is Recruitment?

It is the process by which Greek organizations get to know potential new members.  The purpose of recruitment is for Greek women to meet you, and for you to meet the Greek women.  After a series of parties, women are selected for membership to different sororities.  If you choose to participate in recruitment, there is no commitment to join a sorority.  Sorority recruitment at Southern Polytechnic State University takes place in the beginning of each semester.

A sorority is a sisterhood. It is a diverse group of women who work and interact closely with each other to achieve goals, both individual and common to the group. Each sorority at Southern Polytechnic State University strives to develop the greatest potential of each sister according to her individual talents, skills, and personality.

Today's sorority collegiate is academically and career oriented, has highly developed interpersonal skills, is constantly expanding her talents and interests, and manages her life responsibly.

What can I offer to a sorority?

Sororities are a sisterhood for involved women that are eager to become an important part of shaping the future of the sorority.  All potential new members have unique qualities that will positively impact the sorority.  We encourage the growth of these qualities.
